Tradition

Grantsville is a community steeped in tradition.  And today the tradition was a wonderful experience to be a part of.  We attended the 126th Old Folks Sociable.  According to local legend, Brigham Young asked the saints to hold "sociable" events in their communities when the saints moved to Utah.  Grantsville is one of the few communities still hosting an annual sociable.  Grantsville residents ages 75 and over are honored guests and are treated to a reception where they receive the red-carpet treatment.

In addition to special events for senior citizens, the Old Folks Sociable includes a car show, a hospitality room open throughout the evening, a broadway-type program, a prime-rib dinner, and big band or western band dancing.  Jesse and Bryant had the privilege of participating in the program with their rendition of Nothin' Like a Dame from South Pacific.  They did a fantastic job!

I heard from a past finance committee member that it costs over $20,000 to put on this event.  They just try to break even by selling $15 tickets.

Oh, and in addition to the Old Folks Sociable (open to ages 18 and up) is the Children's Sociable which is held on a school day.  The children walk or are bussed to the high school, where a variety-type program is put on by the children themselves.  Later that same evening, the children perform for adults and family members who want to attend the variety show for $2 each.  I asked Kaysen if he enjoyed the show, and he said it was fine.  I think it would have been "good" or "great" if there had been refreshments.
